Bear Necessities Volume 29
I would like to take a moment to remind all of us of the important role that referees, umpires, and officials play in education-based athletics. These individuals take on what is often a thankless job and, far too often, are met with criticism or negative comments after a call is made. They show up in the rain, in extreme heat, and in all conditions so that our student-athletes have the opportunity to compete.
Without this group we could not host games them. I view my role as a partnership with our officials, and I make it a priority to greet and welcome them to our facilities each time they arrive. Additionally, I serve on the CIF Strategic Committee for Officials, where our focus is on recruiting new officials and retaining those currently serving. The reality is that there is a shortage, and how we treat officials directly impacts the future of high school athletics.
That said, there are certainly times when I may disagree with a call. However, my responsibility is to support all participants in our athletic events including officials and to model the respect we expect from our community.
I ask all of us to do the same. Our Mercy Mission calls us to be a voice for dignity and respect. This extends beyond our athletes and coaches to include our parent community and all spectators. When we find ourselves disagreeing with a call, I ask that we pause and respond in a way that reflects who we are and what we stand for. Thank you for your continued support in creating a positive and respectful environment for all.
