Bear Necessities Volume 16
Last week was a busy one for our winter teams, and I had the opportunity to spend two full days with our Cheer Program, one at practice as they prepared for their first Central Coast Section(CCS) Traditional Cheer Competition (TCC) of the season, and the other cheering them on at the event.
On Thursday, the energy at practice was high, sometimes focused, sometimes playful, as the athletes worked diligently through their routine. A few of the stunts weren't hitting early on, but each time, the team and coaches came together to offer feedback, make corrections, and reset. After back-to-back full-outs, the team was tired but ready.
Saturday brought an early call time but the team showed up energized and focused. They leaned on the leadership of their captains to steady the group and set the tone for the day. I met them on the pool deck before they took the mat for high fives and encouragement.
For the first time this year, our Show Team debuted their routine, and it was impressive. As the performance went on, you could see the nerves fade away and confidence build with each stunt. In cheer, bobbles, and even falls are part of the sport, but our team maintained their composure and kept our flyers up. For a first performance, I was extremely proud of their poise, teamwork, and the strong foundation they've built.
After the Show Team finished, Game Day was able to showcase their routine that brings a noticeable energy to the entire gym. This is the same routine that earned them early accolades at our first JAMZ Regional Championship, and it was exciting to see that same spirit and precision carry onto the mat.
It was a great morning of performances, and I'm already looking forward to the new year, with even more opportunities for our athletes to compete, grow, and represent our school with pride.
